Organizing Tips
Twelve Basic Organizing Tips
Organizing is a process, not an event
1. Visualize what you want your home or office to look like. Write about it. Make a wish list. Do not limit your imagination.
2. Begin in the room where you spend the most time and where you feel the most distress.
3. Set one goal. No long to-do lists.
4. Prioritize what needs to be done. Break your goal down into manageable tasks.
5. Challenge assumptions of what you “must have”. When did I last use it or wear it? Can I get the information online?
6. Categorize your stuff. Sort like things together.
7. Decide what to keep, toss, gift, or sell. Edit ruthlessly. This will create space.
8. Clear surfaces (tables, floors, chairs). Remove unnecessary items that belong elsewhere or present safety hazards. Organize similar things together and similar activities together. Make your space multi-functional.
9. Containerize. Find the right storage container. Stuff lying around looks messy and takes up more space.
10. Schedule organizing time. Put the time on your daily calendar or phone. Be realistic and set a timer. Once a week I will spend an hour a day, once a day I will spend 15 minutes. Stop when you begin to feel overwhelmed.
11. Bookend your actions. Call a friend when you are starting and finishing a task. Share your accomplishments no matter how small they may seem.
12. Ask for help. Consider getting a clutter buddy or hiring a professional organizer.
